What tools did you choose and why? What worked and what didn’t? How did you apply the tools to your practice? What are barriers to your use, or student use? (Refer to your experience and articles discussed in class) How can video be used as a learning/assessment tool? (Refer to your experience and articles discussed in class)
This week I chose to investigate 5 tools. They were: Flipgrid, Screencastify, Mote, EdPuzzle and Kami. All of them serve different purposes, and I found them to be doable in my 3rd grade classroom. First, Flipgrid is especially helpful to have students record themselves to present responses to questions and feedback. I decided to use Flipgrid as a component in my hyperdoc lesson. Students will record themselves responding to videos about animal adaptations. It will be used as an informal assessment to confirm they have watched the video and understood what they have watched. I will also use it as an assessment tool to gain information regarding their level of prior knowledge. Secondly, I have never been able to use Screencastify because my former computer would not allow me access for some reason. Therefore, I feel about 8 months behind my colleagues, but I was able to take this opportunity and learn how to use Screencastify for my flipped lesson. I found it somewhat easy to use. However, I do have a question. While I was doing my lesson on one tab (Benchmark), I was able to switch tabs and go to my Google Doc but the video did not record the changing of the tabs (screens). Therefore, I had to record my lesson in two parts. Does anyone know how to make this happen or what setting I should be on to record, so I can move from one tab to another tab and have Screencastify capture all of it? Next, I tried Mote. WOW! I love mote! Talk about a great chrome extension. I was able to go through all of my students' writing and leave each one a detailed message as feedback to their writing assignment. It saved me so much time, also. Due to our Thanksgiving break, I have yet to see if my students can access my feedback recording but I will ask them once we return from break. I will be using Mote on a regular basis. The last two were EdPuzzle and Kami. I like both of these programs. I used EdPuzzle with my students and they really enjoyed learning about EdPuzzle. EdPuzzle serves many purposes in my classroom, but I use it for math, most of the time. I looked into Kami but I have not used it yet with my students. I haven't found a need for it in my classroom yet due to a lot of our curriculum is already online and able to annotate. However, it does look interesting, and I will try it one day...just to experience it. I really appreciate learning about new digital tools. However, I tend to stick with what I know and with what works well for me in my classroom. So I will definitely use these new tools, that I just learned, on a regular basis.

Hi Kimberlee, I'm so impressed with all the ways you are trying these tools with your students. I really like Flipgrid too and it's probably the tool I use most for getting quick responses that we can all share. I remember Scott talking about us creating a toolbox that we can use moving forward. With all the tools everyone is trying and sharing, I feel like I've come so much farther than I expected to at this point. Thanks for your helpful information.

I'm so glad you tried Mote Kimberly! I love it too. It meshes really well with Google classroom. Are you using it through SeeSaw? Once your kids have a chance to listen you will also be pleased to get a weekly report from Mote telling you who listened to the messages you left. The next thing I want to try is having the kids add-on Mote so they can do verbal messages back to me. Especially when they have questions it seems like Mote would be so useful. I haven't tried Flipgrid yet with my kids and I know it would be useful so that is on my "to do" list. We are learning so many tricks nad tools but I just need more time to practice and get good with them. One feature with Kami that is very handy is the read to me feature. Kids can have Kami read any text to them. For my ELs and SpED kids this is very useful. In Screencastify I always click on DESKTOP and have been able to switch between tabs. Hope that helps!
