What tools did you choose and why? What worked and what didn’t? How did you apply the tools to your practice? What are barriers to your use, or student use? (Refer to your experience and articles discussed in class) How can video be used as a learning/assessment tool? (Refer to your experience and articles discussed in class)
This week I chose to investigate 5 tools. They were: Flipgrid, Screencastify, Mote, EdPuzzle and Kami. All of them serve different purposes, and I found them to be doable in my 3rd grade classroom. First, Flipgrid is especially helpful to have students record themselves to present responses to questions and feedback. I decided to use Flipgrid as a component in my hyperdoc lesson. Students will record themselves responding to videos about animal adaptations. It will be used as an informal assessment to confirm they have watched the video and understood what they have watched. I will also use it as an assessment tool to gain information regarding their level of prior knowledge. Secondly, I have never been able to use Screencastify because my former computer would not allow me access for some reason. Therefore, I feel about 8 months behind my colleagues, but I was able to take this opportunity and learn how to use Screencastify for my flipped lesson. I found it somewhat easy to use. However, I do have a question. While I was doing my lesson on one tab (Benchmark), I was able to switch tabs and go to my Google Doc but the video did not record the changing of the tabs (screens). Therefore, I had to record my lesson in two parts. Does anyone know how to make this happen or what setting I should be on to record, so I can move from one tab to another tab and have Screencastify capture all of it? Next, I tried Mote. WOW! I love mote! Talk about a great chrome extension. I was able to go through all of my students' writing and leave each one a detailed message as feedback to their writing assignment. It saved me so much time, also. Due to our Thanksgiving break, I have yet to see if my students can access my feedback recording but I will ask them once we return from break. I will be using Mote on a regular basis. The last two were EdPuzzle and Kami. I like both of these programs. I used EdPuzzle with my students and they really enjoyed learning about EdPuzzle. EdPuzzle serves many purposes in my classroom, but I use it for math, most of the time. I looked into Kami but I have not used it yet with my students. I haven't found a need for it in my classroom yet due to a lot of our curriculum is already online and able to annotate. However, it does look interesting, and I will try it one day...just to experience it. I really appreciate learning about new digital tools. However, I tend to stick with what I know and with what works well for me in my classroom. So I will definitely use these new tools, that I just learned, on a regular basis.

Blog: Reflect on how you might use Google Forms 1)in your practice and 2) for your Touro action research/capstone project. What might be the best uses for your particular situation?
I am not new to using Google Forms but I am new to creating them on my own. Thankfully, I have a strong third grade partner and she creates our forms for both of us. This week's activities and readings taught me to create my own forms. It was actually a fulfilling feeling to be able to know that I can assist my colleague and divide up the workload more equally. I will use Google Forms in my classroom to check in with students for SEL. I currently use Google Forms for assessments and data collection. In addition, I can see Google Forms being used for quick reading quizzes. There are many different ways to use this data collection platform. As for my Touro action research project, I can see myself using it as a survey. I will need to gather information from parents, administration, colleagues, and students, so I will need to be familiar with creating surveys using Google Forms. This is a great tool, and I can see the several ways in which I will apply it in my everyday work life. |
